Reading with Carmen Stephan: "It's all true"
Friday, December 19, 2025, 6.30 pm
Berching-born author Carmen Stephan takes you on a journey through the moving story of her novel It's All True. The work combines historical events with literary fiction: In 1941, a group of Brazilian fishermen embark on a dangerous journey to protest against exploitation—a story that inspired director Orson Welles to make a film that was never completed. With linguistic precision and narrative depth, Carmen Stephan unfolds a panorama of reality, artistic vision, and a dream between idealism and failure.
Carmen Stephan, born in 1974, lived in Brazil for several years, which inspired her to write three books. First came “Brasília Stories” (stories from the capital), then the novel “Mal Aria” (told from the perspective of a mosquito), which was awarded the Jürgen Ponto Foundation Literature Prize and the Buddenbrookhaus Debut Prize. The author received the Bavarian Literature Scholarship for her latest novel, It's All True.
We look forward to an inspiring evening with a captivating reading and insights into the creation of the novel in a subsequent discussion with the author! An evening about truth, fiction, and the power of storytelling.
Before the start and during the breaks, you can enjoy mulled pirinha and Brazilian Christmas snacks.
